educational philosophy

My role as an educator is to create an environment that is personalized and student-centered which creates a sense of social partnership.  Creating a feeling of community learners are more interactive and try harder to make sense of what their counterpart is saying encouraging learners to engage in each of the cognitive processes. With this approach, students are given opportunities to make choices about their own learning and contribute to the design of learning experiences while providing performance based results of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn.  In this context of teaching and learning, I attempt to integrate the following ideas:

ESTABLISHING EFFECTIVE ONLINE LEARNING

I will create an effective online learning environment by leveraging web-based tools such as eLearning authoring software, screencasting tools, and course management systems to help students acquire skills in a mode that is asynchronously at their point of need in a scalable medium. Well-designed eLearning tools that integrate different modes of learning, flexible learning paths, or interactivity, can greatly increase student learning beyond the classroom, particularly in the areas of competency-based learning.  And as distance education programs expand and grow, it becomes increasingly important that eLearning tools are effectively used. I am committed to understanding principles of instructional design and online learning to help enhance student learning in the virtual environment.

SCENARIO BASED LEARNING AND AUTHENTIC ACTIVITY

In the world of training and development, it is my desire to use scenario based learning as a stimulus for authentic activity. Authentic activities engage the learner in a realistic and meaningful task that is relevant to the learner’s interests and goals. By engaging learners in meaningful and relevant tasks, they can see the direct implications of their actions and apply the knowledge gained in real world situations (Wilson & Cole, 1996).  Scenario based learning will give students the ability to apply their knowledge under appropriate conditions when problem-solving activities are placed in an authentic context and are more likely to retrieve the newly acquired knowledge in real world problem-based situations.

RELY ON RESEARCH-BASED APPROACHES

Lastly, I believe in using research-based instructional strategies to encourage and promote learning. I will specifically        be combining these methods with technology to meet students’ needs while only using technology to increase                  learning and not for “technologies sake”.
